HARRISBURG, Oct. 6, 2014 — State Sen. Larry Farnese (D-Phila.) today released the following statement after the School Reform Commission voted to cancel the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers’ current contract with no advance notice to the teachers and families of the School District of Philadelphia:

“The job of reforming the School District of Philadelphia and returning it to good financial health is not easy. I understand that. However, today’s decision by the School Reform Commission to use its ‘nuclear option’ and void the current teacher contract is by no means the best way to move the district forward.

“I’m pleased that the SRC is not going to cut teacher salaries but I don’t understand why teachers, parents and students need to suffer for the commission’s inability to come to a financial agreement with the PFT.

“Today’s vote, which was done without any advance notice, does nothing but destabilize our school communities and balance the district’s budget on the backs of its more than 15,000 teachers.”
