HARRISBURG, Sept. 24, 2014 — State Sen. Larry Farnese (D-Phila.) today released the following statement after Gov. Tom Corbett signed House Bill 1177, which enacts a cigarette tax to generate approximately $49 million annually for the School District of Philadelphia:

“Gov. Corbett, on behalf of the children and families of the School District of Philadelphia, thank you for enacting legislation that would provide $49 million in new money for Philadelphia’s schools. But I have to ask, why are you not doing more to resolve the issues that are plaguing almost all of Pennsylvania’s schools?

“Just about every school administrator and teacher I talk with say the same thing: our schools need more help and your policies – from the lack of a fair funding formula to disappearing classroom supports – are not there and our children are suffering. Governor, this was a good first step, but you can and should do more.”
