Old City Traffic Project Awarded $2.7M Grant
On July 16, 2020
PHILADELPHIA, July 16, 2020 – An on-going traffic safety project in the Old City District has been awarded a $2.7 million state grant, state Sen. Larry Farnese announced today.
The grant was one of 27 awarded statewide through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund, and will go toward traffic improvements and bike-lane access on Market Street from 2nd Street to 6th Street.
“This historic route, the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district, sees thousands of tourists and thousands of cars every day,” Farnese said. “These improvements take into account the changing way we get around and will help residents and visitors do it safely.”
PennDOT evaluated the applications and made selections based on such criteria as safety benefits, regional economic conditions, the technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency, and operational sustainability.
“The Old City District earned this grant through diligence and commitment to their role,” Farnese said. “It’s a highly competitive program and they delivered.”
The grant was part of $30.2 million distributed statewide.
