Improvements Needed to Protect the Health of Students and Teachers

This week I stood with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, AFT Pennsylvania and members of the Fund Our Facilities Coalition to demand an immediate $100 million in funding to address asbestos and lead in our schools. The teachers who give their lives in the service of educating our young people should not be risking their lives when they go to work. This $100 million is desperately needed to protect educators and students, and we cannot delay.  For more information and news article, click here.

Affordable Housing Grant will Help Fitzwater Homes

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019 I was happy to join members of our community, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, President of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church Enterprises Beverly Stevenson, and PHFA Regional Director Jay Hausher at the Holy Trinity Baptist Church to celebrate a $200,000 state grant that will be used to rehabilitate 22 affordable housing units for the Fitzwater Homes Preservation Project. The affordable housing units have helped folks in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood for 40 years.  I was pleased to support this project and will continue to fight for affordable housing in our city.

LGBTQ Equality Caucus Condemns Anti-LGBTQ Legislation

Court gavel on rainbow flag colored pages of the United States ConstitutionI stand with the LGBTQ Equality Caucus in condemning legislation that would block the Transportation Department from issuing gender-neutral licenses and would prohibit gender-confirmation surgery or the administration of hormone therapy to state prison inmates.

These proposed bills are remnants of a dark past that seek to enshrine discrimination and further marginalize citizens of this commonwealth. The bills are discriminatory, and I will stand firmly against any anti-LGBTQ legislation in Pennsylvania.
