Legislative Update

Funding General Assistance

Senator Farnese Remarks on the Proposal to Cut General AssistanceWe as legislators have a duty to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Repealing or rolling back General Assistance in Pennsylvania CANNOT happen. This is such a critically important resource (approx. $200 a month) for those who need it the most. General Assistance allows folks with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and children without custodial parents to purchase items that aren’t covered by food stamps or other programs. Repealing this program sends a message to Pennsylvanians that we don’t care that you are living in poverty or that you are food insecure. I won’t stop fighting for those who need us most. Senate Bill 95 – Anti-SLAPP Legislation

On June 10, 2019, I was proud to join colleagues and advocates to take a stand against workplace harassment in Pennsylvania. “We as elected officials have access to this podium, and we have a duty to use that access to speak for the voiceless, stand with the victimized, and spotlight the injustice.”

I have re-introduced Senate Bill 95, which would put and end to abuse of the judicial system by expanding Pennsylvania’s anti-SLAPP statute beyond to apply to all protected speech related issues of public and social concern, ensuring that whenever a person is ready to speak up it is the right time, and they will not be silenced because they speak a truth that someone with money doesn’t want to hear.

This legislation has passed the Senate the last two legislative session with overwhelming bipartisan support. Call your senators and representatives in the House and tell them to pass SB95!
