Rebuilding and Revitalizing our Neighborhoods

The Department of Community and Economic Development is now accepting applications for neighborhood and community improvement and revitalization projects in Philadelphia through the newly established Local Share Account. LSA will distribute a portion of slot machine license fees generated within Philadelphia. Funds are available for economic development, neighborhood revitalization, community improvement and other projects in the public interest within Philadelphia. I am holding a Public Meeting on Distributing Gaming Funds tonight, December 4th at 7 p.m. at the Broad Street Ministry located at 315 S. Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Join neighbors and colleagues to learn how gaming revenues can be used to help rebuild and revitalize our neighborhoods.

Turkey Giveaway

During Thanksgiving week, I took part in my annual turkey giveaway at the Lutheran Settlement House in Fishtown. I got a chance to meet with folks around the community and speak with constituents as they prepared for the holiday. The Lutheran Settlement House is a non-profit that provides programs and services for families, children, and seniors in the area. Thank you for all the work you do for our neighbors.

Amigos Spanish Immersion Preschool –
Grand Opening

On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the Amigos Spanish Immersion Preschool in Old City. It was a great opportunity to welcome families and their children to this brand-new learning environment in Philadelphia.

Camp Out for Hunger

On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Preston and Steve radio show to participate in the 21st Annual Camp Out for Hunger event. This is the largest single-location food drive in the country with all donations going to Philabundance. I want to thank all who participated in donating at our drop off locations throughout the district. I was able to donate 157 pounds of food towards the event. While on air with Preston and Steve, I had the pleasure of participating in a game where I secured another 300 pounds of donated food.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Enrollment

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is currently accepting applications for the 2018-2019 season. If you or someone you may know needs help with their heating bill, you may qualify for LIHEAP. Applications are accepted until April 12, 2019. “Speak Out for Safe Schools” Video Competition

Friday, December 7, 2018 is the last day to submit the “Speak Out for Safe Schools” videos for the 2nd Annual “Talk to Your Senator” Statewide Video Competition for Pennsylvania students grades 6-12. We as legislatures want to hear from you on how we can help make schools safer. For more information and details,  click here.

One of Philadelphia’s incredible holiday traditions is back! A Philly POPS Christmas: Spectacular Sounds of the Season will perform at the Kimmel Center, on various dates, from now through December 22nd. Performers include, Broadway legend Todd Ellison, Hamilton’s Mandy Gonzalez, The Philadelphia Boys Choir, and more.

The Walnut Street Theatre presents the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.  This is a great show for the whole family to enjoy.

The Pennsylvania Ballet Presents George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker – December 7 – 31, 2018

The NutcrackerThe Pennsylvania Ballet will return to the Academy of the Music for the 54th year to perform George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker from December 7th through December 31st. This holiday favorite is full of sugar plum fairies, a mouse king, snowflakes, and of course dancing nutcrackers. This is a show for the whole family to enjoy.

Independence Seaport Museum’s Parade of Lights – Saturday, December 8, 2018

The Independence Seaport MuseumThe Independence Seaport Museum will host the annual Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 8th. Boats will be decked out in holiday lights and festive décor while floating down the Delaware River. Guest can view the parade at Penn’s Landing or from the second-floor terrace at the museum.
