It’s a pleasure to share another edition of the First District Connection with you.  Today I’d like to tell you about:

  • A veterans’ employment outreach day;
  • Property and rent rebates;
  • Searching for your unclaimed property; and
  • Becoming a Tree Tender.

Veterans’ Employment Outreach Day May 8

American flagThe Pennsylvania State Civil Service Commission is inviting all veterans to their Veterans’ Employment Outreach Day. 

There will be morning and afternoon presentations to explain the states’ civil service application and testing process.  '

You can also take advantage of mini-counseling sessions.

Property and Rent Rebates

housesFinancial help is available if you are:

  • 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older and permanently disabled;
  • A homeowner and have a total income not exceeding $35,000 a year; or
  • A renter and have a total income not exceeding $15,000 annually.

If you meet these qualifications you may be eligible for a property tax or rent rebate.  To learn more, or to apply, contact my office at 215-952-3121.

Your Unclaimed Property

Treasury DepartmentVisit www.patreasury.gov to search the Unclaimed Property database, which contains $1.8 billion in unclaimed property, or call 1-800-222-2046. A Return Team member will assist you in recovering your property free of charge.  Be sure to also check www.patreasury.gov to learn about other Treasury programs that can help to strengthen your family’s economic security:

  • Keystone HELP, a low-interest energy efficiency loan program to slash your energy bills;
  • RetirePA.com, where you’ll find tips and tools to help you plan, save and retire with financial security; and
  • The Pennsylvania 529 College Savings Program, a tax-smart and flexible way to save for higher education.

Become a PHS Tree Tender

PA Horticultural SocietyJoin the Plant One Million Team! PHS's Tree Tenders® program offers hands-on tree care training for residents of the five-county Philadelphia region. The training will cover tree biology, identification, planting, proper care and working within your community.
Form a Tree Tenders group in your community by attending with two neighbors. Tree
Tenders groups are eligible for street and yard trees for their communities and are invited to follow-up educational opportunities!

Available for ISA, PA LA, Act 48 and PLNA credit. Given the intensity of the training and the evening hours, the course is not appropriate for children under 16.
