Creating Jobs and Expanding Philadelphia’s Ports

Last week I had the pleasure to stand with Governor Corbett as he released $15 million to continue the Delaware River dredging project, expand port capacity and create jobs.

Pictured behind me (L to R) are Governor Corbett; Charles Kopp, Chairman of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority; Former U.S. Senator Arlen Specter; and Pat Eiding, Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO President.  These funds will be used to deepen the Delaware River and clear the way for the new Southport Marine Terminal.

Last year, the Pennsylvania Senate unanimously passed House Bill 666 which created the Southport Marine Terminal and transferred 180 acres of Navy Yard land from the City to the State.

Working with prime sponsor State Representative Bill Keller, we successfully delivered the bill to the Governor’s desk.  When completed, the Southport Marine Terminal will be a tremendous economic boost to the region, and thanks to continued dredging, larger ships will be able to use Philadelphia’s ports creating thousands of jobs for Philadelphia’s longshoremen, truck drivers, crane operators and support professionals.

LIHEAP: Free Money to Pay Your Heating Bills

If you want to get a head start on managing your winter energy bills take advantage of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).  LIHEAP grants are determined by household size and income, and grants range from $100 to $1,000.  If you received LIHEAP last year, or are receiving assistance, check your mail for a preprinted State application.  If you did not receive an application in the mail you can submit your application after Tuesday, November 1, 2011.

For more information, contact the State’s LIHEAP hotline at 866-857-7095, Monday through Friday (individuals with hearing impairments should call the TDD number at 1-800-451-5886).

Improving Campaign Financing

FarneseI recently testified before the Senate Democratic Policy Committee to advocate for campaign finance reform.  I’m also co-sponsoring Senate Bill 1260 which puts a dollar limit on contributions and increases the level of transparency on those who contribute.  The bill would also enact significant improvements on the filing and reporting requirements for campaign finance statements.

I know this is an important to you, so I will continue to keep you informed as the issue and legislation move forward.  Click here to watch my testimony.

International Day of Peace

peacedaylogoPeace Day – Philly 2011 is a volunteer initiative to promote peace.   It is affiliated with the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia, the Alliance for a Sustainable Future, and non-profit and non-governmental organizations.  I was pleased to offer a Senate Resolution recognizing September 21 as the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.  Congratulations, and thank you to everyone involved.
